NEW DELHI: The winter session of parliament is scheduled to start from November 25 and continue till December 20, Union minister of parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju announced on Tuesday. During the session, several crucial legislations are expected to be discussed.
In a post on X, Rijiju said, “President, on the recommendation of Government of India, has approved the proposal for summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Winter Session, 2024 from 25th November to 20th December, 2024 (subject to exigencies of parliamentary business).”
Next day on November 26, the government will hold a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament to mark the 75th anniversary of the Constitution.
The special joint sitting will also be held in the Central Hall of the Samvidhan Sadan (Old parliament Building), where the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution in 1949, the minister said.
The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950. The Constitution day was originally celebratd as National Law Day before the BJP government in 2015 renamed it as Constituion Day to honor the 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.
During the session, the government may also look to introduce One Nation One Election bill and Waqf Ammendment Bill which is currently under the review of JPC.
Recently, PM Modi hinted that the government was working towards One Nation One Poll, which will bring simultaneous polls for Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
“We are now working towards One Nation One Election, which will strengthen India’s democracy, give optimum outcome of India’s resources and the country will gain new momentum in achieving the dream of a developed India. Today, India is moving towards One Nation One Civil Code that is a Secular Civil Code,” he said.
The NDA and the INDIA blocs have been actively competing to position themselves as the true “defenders and upholders” of the Constitution, especially after the recently conculded Lok Sabha election. The Congress-led INDIA bloc has been attacking the BJP-led coalition for allegedly “undermining” the Constitution and constitutional principles, while the BJP and its partners have tried to turn the tables. In July this year, the government officially designated June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to commemorate the Emergency period.
