A woman is dead and another is in hospital with serious injuries after a horrific stabbing attack in Adelaide on Wednesday.

Emergency services raced to a business address on Lydia Street in the suburb of Plympton at about 3.40pm after the women were allegedly stabbed by a man not known to them, police said.

A woman in her 30s died at the scene and a woman in her 40s is receiving treatment at Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.

The police arrested a 30-year-old man at the scene and it is expected he will be charged with murder.

Lydia Street is closed and the police have asked the public to avoid the area.

The street is about 6.6km from the Adelaide CBD.
