LUCKNOW: The pieces of the puzzle started falling into place once mobile phone records of the two brothers from Rae Bareli were examined in detail. One of them was found dead near his village last week on October 19. On Thursday, the local police arrested the younger brother of the deceased on charges of murder.
Nitin, 22, had gone missing from his village Bewli on the evening of October 17.Two days later, his body was found hanging from a tree in an isolated area a few kilometres away from the village.
Policemen from Salon police station who were the first to respond to the SOS call understood after spending an hour at the crime scene that Nitin was bludgeoned to death with a blunt object and his body had been suspended on purpose to mislead the investigators.
The family members were unable to explain the reason which could have pushed Nitin to take the extreme step or point fingers at someone who harboured a grudge against their older son. “His wedding had been fixed to a young woman from a nearby village. And he was last seen stepping out with his younger brother, Nanku alias Lallan, who found odd jobs as a driver. That was the lead we got from Nitin’s father Dayaram the day after his body was found,” said Shyam Pal, the station house officer of Salon police station.
Lallan, too, feigned ignorance about the reasons which could have pushed his brother to the brink and was extremely vague while sharing details with police initially. The autopsy report was out by then and it was clear that a wooden stick was used to kill Nitin and he was also strangulated before being hanged from the tree.
Back on a break from Mumbai where Nitin worked as a mason, the family thought it would be appropriate for him to settle down and a match was found for him. For the past two weeks, Nitin spent most of his time over the phone talking to the woman or on a video call with her. On being questioned, the woman expressed her grief at Nitin’s death and said she never suspected anything amiss while talking to him.
With nobody to suspect, police summoned Lallan for questioning again. On examining his phone, policemen realized that recent call logs, call recordings, chats and messages had all been deleted. The call detail records were summoned from the telecom service provider, and it became clear that Lallan, too, was in touch with the same woman and was desperate to marry her.
“He gave in once he was grilled with proper evidence and confessed to the crime. The woman’s father works as a construction worker in Delhi and his family stays with him. The woman is 19 or so. Lallan took her number from his brother and introduced himself as dewar (younger brother-in-law). But as things turned out, he started having all kinds of exchanges with her. She was indulging them both. We have called her for questioning and have informed her father about the whole case,” said Rae Bareli deputy superintendent of police and Salon circle officer Vandana Singh who supervised the investigations.
