The Himachal Pradesh government proposes to build 23 ropeway projects across the state at an estimated cost of around INR 9,660 crore to increase the tourism potential and decongest the state’s urban hubs via alternative transport solutions.

Deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who also holds the transport portfolio, said two ropeway projects — Baglamukhi and Palchan-Rohtang — are already under construction at a cost of INR 388.65 crore. Of the three projects proposed for Kangra district, the 3.5km Bir-Billing aerial tramway will be completed at an estimated cost of INR 156 crore, he said. Bids have already been invited for this project to be constructed in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

Another project is proposed between Bhatarka and Thathri in Kangra district, having a length of 13.05km, at an estimated cost of INR 585.27 crore. “Bids have been invited for this project too and the state has requested to bring it under the Centre’s Parvatmala scheme. A 6.5km ropeway is also proposed for Adi Himani Chamunda in Dharamshala at an estimated cost of INR 289 crore,” he said.

According to officials aware of the project details, the draft conceptual plan and pre-feasibility studies for developing alternative innovative transport solutions for major tourist towns of Shimla, Dharamshala and Manali have already been completed. The request for proposal for development of innovative urban transport solutions by ropeways in Shimla Phase-I under PPP mode has been floated, they said, adding that the 22km-long ropeway would cost INR 1,200 crore.

TAAI & TAFI urge finance ministry to reconsider TCS implementation

Both the associations have not only requested a meeting with the ministry to discuss the matter of TCS but has also appealed for the postponement of the scheduled increase in TCS, which is set to take effect from October 1, 2023. In a detailed letter addressed to the ministry, TAAI and TAFI highlighted the significant challenges posed by the TCS and its potential impact on the travel industry.

Financial bids for consultancy services for preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for ropeway connectivity to Killar in Pangi valley via Sach Pass in Chamba district have been opened and one company has been awarded the work, the said. This ropeway from Bhanodi to Pregaraon via Sach Pass will be developed in eight stages and have a tentative length of 21.8 km.Financial bids have also been opened and work for Narkanda-Hatu peak ropeway awarded to a Hong Kong-based company.

The tentative length of the Narkanda-Hatu peak ropeway is 3.1km while the project’s estimated cost is INR 172 crore.

Request for proposal for Mata Baglamukhi temple ropeway from Chandigarh-Manali national highway near Pandoh reservoir up to the temple (Bakhli) in Mandi district has also been floated.

A company has been awarded the consultancy work for identification, planning and preparing feasibility reports (techno-commercial) for the overhead mass rapid transit system in Himachal (excluding Shimla, Dharamshala, and Manali). Expression of interest-cum-financial bid for three passenger ropeways — Jabli-Kasauli aerial tramway in Solan, Shirgul Mahadev Temple in Sirmaur and Pundrik Rishi Temple in Mandi — has also been floated.
