NEW DELHI: A New York judge has ordered Ivanka Trump to testify at the ongoing trial of the state’s $250 million civil fraud lawsuit against her father, former President Donald Trump, and his real estate company.
According to a report by Bloomberg, earlier, Ivanka had requested the court to strike down a subpoena for her testimony, which was denied by Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling in favour of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who initiated the lawsuit last year.
Ivanka Trump, initially a defendant in the suit, was dismissed from the case earlier this year. Her lawyer argued that the subpoena was a form of “harassment,” but the judge rejected this claim, emphasizing Ivanka Trump’s past involvement with the Trump Organization, Bloomberg reported.
According to the report, the trial is now in its fourth week, is expected to include testimonies from Donald Trump and his adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.
The suit alleges that Donald Trump inflated his assets by billions of dollars in financial documents provided to banks and insurers. The former president denies any wrongdoing and has labeled the case as a “witch hunt” by Democrats.
The attorney general’s lawyers underscored Ivanka Trump’s financial and professional ties with the Trump Organization, justifying the necessity of her testimony in the case.
The judge further dismissed Ivanka Trump’s argument that she no longer has sufficient ties to New York to be subject to the court’s jurisdiction, citing her business transactions and property ownership in the state. Additionally, the judge deemed it too late for Ivanka Trump to submit an affidavit verifying her lack of business activities in New York, as suggested by her lawyer during the court proceedings.
Ivanka Trump’s lawyer criticized the state for pressing for her testimony, highlighting that the attorney general had not attempted to depose her before the trial, unlike her father and brothers. The lawyer accused the state of needlessly subjecting Ivanka Trump to a highly publicized trial, terming it a form of harassment against both her and her father.
