GHAZIABAD: A 28-year-old criminal who was wanted in connection with the death of a 19-year-old B-Tech student during a phone-snatching incident was killed in an encounter by Ghaziabad police early on Monday morning.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Jeetendra, alias Jeetu, a resident of Mishal Garhi area in Masuri, Ghaziabad.
On Friday, Kirti Singh, a B-Tech student at ABES College, was injured during a phone-snatching incident on NH-9 in the Masuri area while she was on her way to her house in Hapur with her friend Diksha Jindal in an auto-rickshaw.
Kirti passed away in Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad on Sunday.
On Sunday, the police arrested one of the accused, Balbir, after a gunfight. He was riding the bike while the deceased, Jeetendra, was riding pillion during the phone-snatching incident.
“At around 3am on Monday, while police were conducting checks along the Ganga River road, they spotted two people on a bike and signaled them to stop. However, they made a sharp turn and attempted to escape. When the police began to chase them, the accused opened fire on the officers, injuring a sub-inspector. In the exchange of gunfire, the accused was hit in the leg by a bullet from a police weapon, causing them to fall on the road. The police surrounded and apprehended one of the two individuals while the others managed to escape in the cover of darkness,” said Vivek Yadav, DCP, Rural area of Ghaziabad.
The officer further stated that the injured person was identified as Jeetendra, and he was responsible for dragging Kirti out of the auto during the phone-snatching incident. He was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A total of 12 cases, including robbery and snatching, were filed against Jeetendra in various police stations in Delhi-NCR. A Gangster Act was imposed on him in 2020.
