PATNA: Happiness and sorrow, they say, go together! A man celebrating his selection as the Senior Deputy Collector suddenly plunged into grief when he got news about the death of his father at a local hospital in Patna.
He died early Sunday morning barely hours after the result of the state civil services exam had been declared.
Lalan Kumar Bharti, youngest son of Jagdish Das from Barhat block in Jamui district, had gone into celebration mode when he was declared successful in the 67th Combined Competitive Examination conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission(BPSC).He was allotted the coveted Bihar Administrative Service.
Hardly had he begun celebrating the occasion in the company of family and friends while also receiving congratulation messages on his cell phone when his mobile rang up, instantly robbing all his happiness. It was about the death of his ailing father who had died at a city hospital after battling pancreatic cancer. The news left him shell-shocked, pushing him into a state of mourning, witnesses said.
“Nothing could be more shocking than this. He left for heavenly abode on the day my result was announced. Had he been alive, he would be very happy. His dream was to see his son become a collector,” Bharti told the media on Sunday, with twin emotions of happiness and sorrow getting reflected on his face.
Bharti said his father didn’t allow financial constraints to come in the way of children’s education and gave first priority to education. “Unka sapna tha ki unka beta (deputy) collector bane,” Bharti who cleared the exam in his third attempt said.
A local villager Bhishmdeo Mandal said the deceased faced severe financial troubles in his life, yet he didn’t make any compromise with the education of his children. The result is that all his three sons are in jobs now. “He himself struggled but ensured all his children completed their studies. Now all are employed—one son is a teacher, other is engineer while the youngest has become Senior Deputy Collector,” Mandal said.
