NOIDA: A 25-year-old delivery executive attached with Blinkit – an online grocery store – who forced his way inside a flat in a housing society in Greater Noida West and sexually assaulted a 19-year-old customer was arrested after a gunfight on Sunday.
Sumit Sharma, the accused, was nabbed in Khairpur village of Greater Noida.
Hirdesh Katheriya – additional DCP (central Noida) – said police received a tip-off on Sunday morning that Sumit was hiding in his brother’s house in Khairpur.A team searched the place around 9am, but Sumit was not found there.
“While one police team stayed put in the village, another searched the area around the Blinkit store with which Sumit is attached. He was arrested from Khairpur chowk while trying to flee,” Katheriya said.
Sumit, however, fled from police custody while a team was bringing him to Bisrakh police station, where a case was lodged against him. “Around 9.45am, he snatched the service revolver of sub-inspector Bharat Singh and jumped off the police vehicle. A call was made to the police station for immediate reinforcements,” the ADCP said.
Police searched the area for about an hour and found Sumit hiding behind the bushes. “He fired at the cops from the gun he had snatched. When the police team retaliated, a bullet hit him in the right leg. He was arrested again and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. He is stable now,” Katheriya said.
Sumit has been booked under sections 376 (rape), 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
The woman who was sexually assaulted was staying alone in the flat, which is owned by her sister’s fiance, who had gone to his hometown with his family to attend the funeral of a relative. He had requested her to stay in the flat for a few days and look after the two dogs he owns.
At 5.09am on Friday, the woman had ordered some eggs, bread and milk from Blinkit. Sumit arrived with the items after a few minutes and forced his way into the flat when she opened the door. He groped her, but the woman managed to free herself from his clasp. She ran to the balcony and shouted out to a few morning walkers and guards, who rushed up to help.
Sumit managed to flee and hide at an isolated spot in the society since it was still dark. He slipped out of the compound once the guards called off their search and residents who had rushed to the woman’s help returned to their flats.
Asked for a comment, a spokesperson for Blinkit said on Sunday, “We are cooperating fully with the police investigation. We can’t comment any more at this stage.”
