A police search is underway on a mountain south of Sydney after human remains were reportedly unearthed during construction.

The discovery was made during work on the new Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network on Mt Kembla, east of Wollongong.

While local media reported on the discovery of a skeleton on Thursday, police were unable to confirm the find as the search continued.

In a statement, a NSW Police spokesperson said a police operation was currently underway on the mountain suburb on the city outskirts.

“Officers attached to Wollongong Police District are conducting a search of bushland off Harry Graham Dr,” the spokesperson said.

“We are unable to provide further information at this stage.”

Contractors broke ground on the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network on September 14 on a site near Harry Graham Dr.

The project is designed to meet growing demands for mountain biking in the Illawarra region. Work is expected to continue.
