Coimbatore: Seven students of a leading engineering college in the city were arrested for ragging a second-year student on Wednesday.
The victim, studying at PSG College of Technology, was allegedly assaulted and forced to remove his dress on Monday in the college hostel.
The seven students then tonsured the head of the victim, a native of Tirupur. The incident came to light after the victim informed his parents, who lodged a police complaint on Tuesday night.
The college authorities suspended the seven students as soon as a police complaint was lodged.
The seven arrested were identified as Ram Santhosh, 22, B Naveen alias Yalish, 22, A Mohamed Dilparshah, 21, G Dharanidharan, 20, B Iyappan, 20, S Manikandan, 20, and P Nithyanandarajan, 20
While two of them are second-year students, one is a third-year student, and the rest are final-year students.
According to police, the victim, staying in the hostel, was confronted by the seven students on Monday evening. They demanded money from him to buy alcohol. After he refused, he was beaten up and taken to the room of one of the seniors. There, they forced him to remove his dress and tonsured his head. Though he resisted, two students held his hands while others went tonsured his head.
Law stipulates 2-year jail in ragging case
Soon after he was let off in the wee hours of Tuesday, he rushed to his room and informed his friends. Subsequently, he called up his parents, who came to Coimbatore. They went to the Peelamedu police station and lodged a complaint.
Police have booked the seven students under multiple counts of IPC, including sections 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person, otherwise than on grave provocation), 506 (i) (criminal intimidation), 342 (wrongful confinement), as well the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997. The anti-ragging act stipulates a maximum of two-year imprisonment. A police officer said that a detailed investigation would be conducted.
