Police are investigating whether human remains found at a rural property north of Adelaide are those of missing man Robert Atkins.

The 29-year-old Adelaide man was reported missing by his mother in 2021, with police in April charging a man with his alleged murder.

In a statement, SA Police revealed on Thursday that investigators had located human remains on a property on Peak Rd, Minvalara, south east of Orroroo.

The startling find was made by police on Wednesday, with officers now investigating if the remains are those of Mr Atkins whose disappearance has dogged police.

Detectives from Major Crime Investigation Branch are currently at the scene along with Forensic Response members, a forensic anthropologist, and SES.

SA Police established Task Force Southern in 2021 to investigate the deaths of Mr Atkins and two other men, with detectives on Wednesday travelling to Minvalara.

Mr Atkins was last seen in November 2020, before being reported missing in January, 2021.

In April, a further four people were charged with unlawful detention and causing harm with intent.

Police are expected to provide a further update later on Thursday.
