AYODHYA: Ayodhya is all decked-up for Ram Lalla‘s first Ram Navami at the newly constructed temple. The temple will host a special ceremony to honour the birth of Lord Ram. The significance of Ram Navami is heightened this year due to the recent completion of the temple. The ceremony promises to be a grand affair, with preparations made to ensure a memorable experience for all attendees.
The ritual, known as Surya Abhishek or Surya Tilak, will involve the Sun’s rays directly touching the forehead of the deity.This symbolic gesture holds great importance and is expected to create a divine atmosphere within the temple premises.
What is Surya Abhishek and Surya Tilak?
Surya Abhishek, a term that combines the words Surya (sun) and abhishek (a purifying ritual), is a fascinating phenomenon that involves the interplay of optics and mechanics.
In this ritual, the sun’s rays are carefully directed to illuminate the forehead of the deity, serving as a profound symbol of reverence and devotion.
“The practice of Surya Abhishek using mechanics is not new and has been essential to the ancient temples of the Indian subcontinent.” This highlights the historical significance and long-standing tradition of this unique ritual in the region’s sacred spaces.
Here’s the science behind it.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, (IIT-R) were tasked with creating the Surya Tilak mechanism, a unique feature of the Ram Mandir.

On April 17, at exactly 12 noon, the sunlight will illuminate the forehead of Ram Lalla, the deity residing in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum. This phenomenon will last for a duration of approximately two to two-and-a-half minutes.
The IIT team has conducted two successful trials in preparation for the Surya Abhishek ceremony, which will take place on Ram Navami today.
The team has developed a specialized apparatus equipped with high-quality mirrors and lenses to ensure that the Sun’s rays are precisely directed onto Ram Lalla’s forehead at the designated time.
According to reports, the apparatus consists of a gearbox fitted with reflective mirrors and lenses. Its purpose is to reflect sunrays from the third floor near the shikara into the “garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum)” at the specified time.
The components used in the tilak apparatus are made of brass and bronze materials, chosen for their durability and resistance to corrosion. The gearbox has been meticulously engineered to align with the lunar calendar, ensuring that the sun is accurately positioned on Ram Navami day each year
