A teenage boy has died after he was found with serious injuries on a major Melbourne freeway.

Emergency services were called to the Princes Freeway about 3.15am on Friday following reports a person was injured.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a 17-year-old boy from Moe.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It is unclear how the teenager came to be on the road and police are investigating if he may have fallen from a nearby overpass.

A number of witnesses stopped at the scene and spoke with police.

Major collision investigation detectives are looking to speak with a truck driver who was seen carrying a blue or green shipping container at the time.

They believe the driver may also be able to assist with their inquiries.

Investigations are ongoing into the exact cause of the incident.
