NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Thursday expressed shock after eight former Indian Navy personnel were on Thursday handed death penalty in Qatar by a local court.
The MEA affirmed that India will continue to extend all consular, legal assistance and explore all legal options.
“We attach high importance to this case, and have been following it closely.We will also take up the verdict with Qatari authorities,” MEA said in a statement.Who are the 8 Indians sentenced in Qatar?
The former Indian Navy officers — Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh — were taken to into custody by Qatari intelligence service from Doha on August 30, 2022.
Among those detained is Commander (retd) Purnendu Tiwari, an Indian expatriate who was conferred the the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in 2019.
India’s ambassador to Qatar met the men in prison on October 1 after being granted consular access.
All the eight men were detained and kept in solitary confinement.
What are they charged with?
The Indian nationals, all employees of Al Dahra company, were taken into custody in August last year in an alleged case of espionage. The charges against the Indian nationals were not made public by Qatari authorities.
The government has said that they are still awaiting the detailed judgement.
