NEW DELHI: LG VK Saxena has given sanction for the prosecution of 10 Delhi police officers in a case of embezzlement of government funds, officials said on Sunday.
After scrutinising the evidence on record, Saxena noted that a prima facie case was made out against them, they added.
The alleged embezzlement was to a total of Rs 2.44 crore.
An FIR against two sub-inspectors, three head constables and five constables – posted in Outer District – was registered by the Economic Offence Wing for alleged cheating, criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in October 2019.
During investigation, it was found that the embezzled amount had been credited to the accounts of the accused officers who had then transferred some amounts to the accounts of one accused and his relatives after retaining about 20% of the amount as commission. The tuition fees and HRA bills were checked and details of inflated amounts and illegal beneficiaries was drawn up. An amount of Rs 2.44 crore was found credited in the bank accounts of 12 beneficiaries.
Delhi Police was also directed to submit the case of another suspect who was a head constable in the traffic department expeditiously.
While seeking sanction for prosecuting these police officials, the home department said in the disclosure statements that three of the officers had admitted to stealing government funds. The statements of witnesses, seizure memo as well as statements of the other accused show the involvement of the officers in siphoning off funds for their personal use.
The Economic Offence Wing had filed a chargesheet against four accused and sought a court’s approval to chargesheet the others.
Delhi Police has already dismissed four of the accused from service, by invoking Article 311(2) (b) of the Constitution, Raj Niwas said.
“The inquiry officer informed that as the accounts of the accused have been seized, recovery of the embezzled funds could not be made.
It was also informed that the district concerned is in the process of initiation of departmental action against the accused persons,” a senior LG house official said.
