Former Foreign Minister Marise Payne has announced her retirement, leaving her hotly-contested NSW Senate seat up for grabs.

The minster confirmed her departure on Friday after a 26-year-long career following months of speculation over her exit.

Reports have tipped controversial No Campaigner Warren Mundine, former NSW RSL head James Brown and the Lowy Institute’s Jess Collins as potential contender.
