AHMEDABAD: An Ahmedabad man’s dreams of a happily ever-after with his Green Card-holder wife in the US came down crashing after the woman allegedly took his money and dumped him over phone a fortnight after leaving India, while he waited for her to process his paperwork to join her.
The man, Hitendra Desai, on Tuesday filed a complaint against Yesha Patel, a Shantigram resident, who, he also said, has married again.
In his complaint, the 32-year-old Desai stated that he knew Patel since 2013 when they both were students.
Belonging to different communities, the two decided to tie the knot on March 28, 2017, in Amreli’s Kukavav Gram Panchayat area. The complainant said they hid their marriage from her parents and decided to live separately and later fly to the US to start a new life. Patel, a Green Card holder, left for the US first after allegedly promising to facilitate Desai’s travel soon after reaching.
Desai said he gave her $5,000 for her travel. Patel remained in touch with Desai for about a fortnight after her departure from India, and then cut all ties, telling him that she had informed her parents about their relationship.
Desai further mentioned that he then met her parents, who asked him to file for divorce, which he refused. Later in February 2020, Desai came to know that Patel was in the city and had married again.
Her marriage was registered in the Shahpur ward. Unwilling for a compromise, Desai said he tried contacting Patel, but could not and hence filed the complaint.
The complaint has been registered under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 494 (marrying again during the lifetime of a husband or wife) and 495 (same offence with concealment of the former marriage from the person with whom subsequent marriage is contracted).
