A desperate search is underway after a man allegedly fleeing police leapt into a crocodile-infested river in central Queensland
Police executed a search warrant for a 36-year-old man at CBD address in the Central Queensland town of Rockhampton just before 6pm on Thursday.
The police allege the man left the scene on foot and was sighted against along East Street and Victoria Pde.
A foot pursuit ensued but a short time later, the police say the man “entered” the Fitzroy River to escape the chase.
“Police and emergency services commenced a wide-ranging surface and aerial search involving multiple aircraft and vessels, however, have so far failed to locate the missing man,” the police stated on Friday.
“He is described as caucasian in appearance, approximately 187cm tall, with a thin build, brown hair and blue eyes.
“He was last seen wearing a grey shirt and dark grey shorts.
“The search was suspended at 10.20pm last night and is continuing this morning.”
The Fitzroy River is a notorious crocodile-zone.
In July this year, rangers captured a monster 4.5m saltwater crocodile in the brown river.
Senior Wildlife Officer Josh Morris said at the time wildlife officers had investigated 32 crocodile sightings in the region.
“It is a reminder that Rockhampton is croc country and there is a population of crocodiles in the Fitzroy River, above and below the barrage,” he said.
“Entering the water in croc country is a choice.
“Remember, you are responsible for your own safety in croc country.”
